Despite what the name may suggest, the 2020 World Expo has only just begun in Dubai. The Expo will be running from October 1, 2021, to March 31, 2022. While the Expo was initially penciled in for 2020, concern over the COVID-19 pandemic led the executive committee to unanimously vote to delay the opening date.
World Expos are unrivaled in size on the global stage. Nations from all over the world gather to find solutions to the most urgent current problems. Each event has a clear theme for the countries to follow, and tens of millions of visitors flock to the Expo every year. All participating nations are allowed to build their own incredible pavilion, which provides for a great event and transforms the host city in the long term.
The first World Expo was held in London back in 1851. The concept quickly gained popularity and soon emerged as a regular event. In 1928, the BIE was formed to regulate the huge events, adding a theme to each one and ensuring attempts to better the world in which we live. To this day, no international event can compete with the World Expo in size, duration, scale, or the number of visitors. Not only do they serve as a path to improve the Earth, but also as a bridge between nations.
The theme of the Dubai 2020 World Expo is: “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future.” There are three subthemes for nations to choose from: Opportunity, Mobility, and Sustainability. The subthemes will each have their own pavilions. AGi Architects designed the Opportunity pavilion, Foster and Partners designed the Mobility pavilion, and Grimshaw Architects designed the Sustainability pavilion.
Hammour House, a unique community art project, will join the Sustainability pavilion to explore the issues we face with our coral reefs.
The Mobility pavilion will feature the world’s largest passenger lift, which can hold more than 160 people.
Finally, several country pavilions will join the Opportunity pavilion.
This year, we have six mascots to enjoy:
Over 190 nations will participate in Expo 2020, making it one of the largest and most inclusive Expos in history. For the first time, every participating country will have its own pavilion.
